Use metal thermal pads for larger gaps

The Liquid MetalPad from the German manufacturer Coollaboratory achieves excellent heat transfer performance and does not need to hide behind liquid metal thermal paste when it comes to performance. The application in private as well as industrial use is very easy to implement, only larger gaps - in contrast to the mostly much thicker non-metallic heat conduction and pressure pads - cannot be directly bridged with this heat conduction pad made of metal.

With the help of thin copper foils (for example with a thickness of 0.1 to 0.2 mm) it is also possible to fill larger gaps, since the Liquid MetalPad can be used in conjunction with the copper foil in a sandwich process. For this purpose, precisely cut copper foils and slightly smaller sized Liquid MetalPads are required for the surface to be cooled. Copper foils as well as thermal pads can be easily cut by hand.

  1. Place the metal thermal pad on the component to be cooled (e.g. processor)
  2. Place copper foil on the metal thermal pad
  3. Place the metal thermal pad on the copper foil

If necessary, this process can be repeated several times, with the thermal pad and copper foil always peeling off one another. The metal heat conducting pad must always be used as the final element in order to ensure an optimal connection to the heat sink. The burn-in process required for optimum performance with the Liquid MetalPad takes place when the melting temperature of around 60 ° C is reached. Here it is important that there is a sufficiently strong contact pressure and that the previously existing gap is actually filled.

The heat-conducting pads should generally be slightly smaller than the contact area of the component to be cooled so that no crossover occurs during the melting process (burn-in). Please also note that the metal thermal pads are electrically conductive, but this is not a problem if used properly.

Tip: Be careful not to touch the copper foils or the Liquid MetalPads with your bare fingers in order to avoid dirt and grease on the surfaces. This would negatively affect the thermal conductivity.

For larger quantities or special dimensions (e.g. for industrial use), please contact our sales department, who will then clarify a corresponding implementation. Of course, all liquid metal thermal compounds and thermal pads are RoHS-compliant.
